A Note on Wodehouse

P.G. Wodehouse is always a fun and entertaining read. But I didn't realize how prescient he was until I read Aunt Dahlia's reaction to one of Bertie's girlfriends:

'Yes, Aunt Dahlia,' I said, 'you have guessed my secret. I do indeed love.'
'Who is she?'
'A Miss Pendlebury. Christian Name, Gwladys. She spells it with a "w".'
'With a "g", you mean.'
"With a "w" and a "g".'
'Not Gwladys?'
'That's it.'
The relative uttered a yowl.
'You sit there and tell me you haven't enough sense to steer clear of a girl who calls herself Gwladys? Listen, Bertie,' said Aunt Dahlia earnestly,'I'm an older woman than you are - well you know what I mean - and I can tell you a thing or two. And one of them is that no good can come of association with anything labelled Gwladys or Ysobel or Ethyl or Mabelle or Kathryn."

Indeed, Aunt Dahlia.

As true in 2007 as it was in 1930. If only more of today's parents read Wodehouse.

Comments:
Wodehouse should be required reading in junior high - hammer that message in early!

I love it!! :)

So true, so true. I'd like to add the plethora of name spelling that include "eigh" in them - people, it's not any prettier than a plain 'ol y. It's just a pain in the ass for your kid.

Whatever. Who are they to preach?
This writer doesn't even spell "Roadhouse" right. So I guess it's like the pot calling the kettle black then.

P.S. It's a lottery ticket. A very addicting lottery ticket.

a lotto ticket!! now I can start sleeping again at night.

Hugh Laurie was funnier when he wasn't a Doctor on TV.

I *love* PGW with all my heart. Nobody, bar none, is funnier.

Bertie and his Aunts, Lord Emsworth and his sisters. Love them all! Haven't read P.G. in awhile - thanks for the reminder!
